Team GB marathon runner Dave Webb has suffered Olympic heartache, withdrawing from London 2012 on account of injury.

Webb was a surprise selection for the marathon squad: the chartered accountant did not run the London Marathon in April and was picked despite his personal best of 2hr 15min 48sec falling short of the Olympic qualifying 'A' standard.

However, the 30-year-old, who was eligible for selection having finished 15th in the world championships last year, failed a fitness test at the Dartford Half Marathon due to a stress fracture.

The BOA has decided against naming a replacement in the men's marathon, leaving Scott Overall and Lee Merrien as the only GB representatives.

"We wish Dave the very best in his recovery and applaud him for offering his continued and full support to his athletics teammates," Team GB Chef de Mission Andy Hunt said.
