Miley, McClatchey progress in the pool

Hannah Miley booked her place in the semi-finals of the 200 metres individual medley, but she was blown away by Chinese sensation Ye Shiwen.

Ye set tongues wagging by matching splits of Ryan Lochte in the 400m medley and she looks set to carry on her gold charge as she blew her rivals to pieces with a time of 2:08.90. Miley made a bright start but faded on the freestyle leg to come home in fourth in her heat, almost four seconds adrift of Ye. Miley's time of 2:12.27 was good enough for a place in the semi-finals, but she has work to do after qualifying 10th of the 16 qualifiers.

There was plenty to cheer for the home crowd at the Aquatics Centre, as Caitlin McClatchey announced herself on London 2012 with a storming finish to win her heat of the 200m freestyle. In doing so she cut down Camille Muffat, the Frenchwoman won claimed the 400m title, to qualify as the seventh-fastest for the semi-finals. Italy's world-record holder Federica Pellegrini was the fastest qualifier in 1:57.16.

Michael Phelps looked sluggish once again as he qualified in fifth place for the semi-finals of the 200m butterfly. The Olympic great went out well and was in the lead at the first turn, but he could not, or chose not to, respond to the kick of Dinko Jucic and Tyler Clary to come home in third in his heat.

There was disappointment for Joe Roebuck in the heats of the 200m butterfly as he finishes down in seventh behind in Velimir Stjepanovic. His time of 1:58.99 is over a second behind his PB.

British rowers Katherine Grainger and Anna Watkins did exactly what was required at Eton Dorney, as they got out in front early and stayed there to coast into the final of the double sculls in an Olympic record time of 6:44.33.

The British men's four of Pete Reed, Andy Triggs Hodge, Tom James and Alex Gregory also made a statement of intent, winning their heat in a time of 4:50.27.

GB's men's eight, With 1992 gold medal winner Greg Searle on board, also qualified for the final with a victory over Canada and Holland in the repechage.

Zoe Smith narrowly missed on a British record in the weightlifting at the ExCel. Having picked off a snatch weight of 90kgs in some style, Smith stepped forward to take on 93kgs. Her first attempt was a disappointment, while her second was close to being cleared but she staggered when hoisting the bar over her head and had to release. But by clearing 90kgs she remains in the competition ahead of the clean and jerk.
