Just moments after Jessica Ennis has been crowned Olympic heptathlon champion, Rutherford produced his best leap of 8.31 metres to cement his place at the top of the standings.

After a disappointing first attempt of 6.28m, Rutherford added nearly two metres to his second effort as he leapt into the gold medal position with an effort of 8.21m - which would have been good enough for gold, with Australian Mitchell Watt securing silver with 8.16m

At one point it looked like there might be two British men on the podium as Chris Tomlinson moved into third with his fourth effort of 8.07m, but he was ultimately forced to settle for sixth place, with American Will Claye taking bronze.
