Ennis rules out tilt at hurdles glory

Newly-crowned heptathlon Olympic champion Jessica Ennis has confirmed her intention not to compete in the 100m hurdles, insisting she is "more than happy" with her gold in the multi-discipline event.

A new British record led Ennis to glory on Saturday, her total of 6,955 points proving insurmountable as Germany's Lilli Schwarzkopf finished 306 points adrift in second place. World champion Tatyana Chernova took bronze.

Ennis set three personal bests in her first six events before sealing her triumph with a stunning victory in her 800m heat.

Still fresh in the mind, however, is the 12.54 she ran to win her hurdles race during the first event of the heptathlon, which would have won Ennis gold in the individual 100m hurdles at the Beijing Olympics four years ago.

Despite her performance in the hurdles, the 26-year-old said she needs to give her body a rest and will not be competing in the individual event.

She told BBC Sport: "I did think about it, especially after my display in the hurdles. But for me it was just about the heptathlon. I'm more than happy coming away with this medal.

"Right now it is just to enjoy this moment for as long as I can. I want to spend some time with my family and then just have a bit of a break. It has been such a long build-up and stressful. I am looking forward to relaxing."

It was a memorable night in the Olympic Stadium for Great Britain, with Greg Rutherford and Mo Farah backing up Ennis' heroics with victories in the long jump and 10,000m respectively. And Ennis is hopeful GB's performances spur on the younger generation to great things.

"Three golds is unbelievable," she added. "Hopefully we are inspiring a new generation and it'll have a knock-on effect for the next few years."
