Arrest made after bottle thrown on track

A man was arrested after a bottle was thrown on to the Olympic track seconds before the start of the 100m final.

Usain Bolt stormed to victory in an Olympic record time of 9.63 seconds to defend his crown, but the contest was almost overshadowed by the incident.

As the runners settled in the blocks, a man was heard shouting abuse and just before the gun went off to set the field on their way a bottle landed behind lane four and rolled into lane five.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman confirmed the man had been taken into custody on suspicion of causing a public nuisance.

Bolt claimed he was unaware of the incident, but USA's Justin Gatlin - the bronze medallist - said: "It was a little distraction and I didn't know what it was. But when you're in those blocks and the stadium is quiet you can hear a pin drop."
