Team GB boxing captain Tom Stalker was denied the chance to fight for a medal at London 2012 as he fell to a light-welterweight quarter-final defeat against Munkh-Erdene Uranchimeg of Mongolia.

Stalker, 28, was considered one of the most likely medal hopes in the British squad, but has crashed out before the last four.

The judges awarded the knife-edge fight to Uranchimeg 23-22, following a highly entertaining final round at the Excel Arena.

Widespread reports following the defeat claim Stalker, who failed to talk to the media afterwards, has appealed the decision, given the closeness of the bout.

"He's inconsolable," trainer Dave Alloway told the Guardian. "We are all devastated. He came so close to winning a medal. He could not have done more.

"It was a marked improvement on his last fight. He tried really hard, giving everything to lead this team. He was one point, from a medal, one punch, one shot."
