Muhammad, who was controversially preferred to world No. 1 Aaron Cook, lost 7-3 in the quarter-finals to Nicolas Garcia Hemme of Spain after taking a blow to the head in the third round.

However, when the Spaniard reached the final Muhammad was granted a reprieve via the repechage and he returned on Friday to add GB's second taekwondo medal in as many nights after Jade Jones stunned China's world champion Yuzhuo Hou to claim gold in the women's -57kg category on Thursday.

Muhammad responded to his earlier defeat in style, beating Yousef Karami 11-7 in the first round of the repechage, before producing a clinical performance to down Arman Yeremyan 9-3 for bronze.

He landed an early head shot and opened up a 4-1 lead after the first round. A huge head shot helped him extend his lead to 9-2 and, although his Armenian opponent fought gamely, he easily held out for victory.

"It's unfortunate that it wasnt gold but I'm grateful that I managed to get a medal," Muhammad told BBC Sport. "The crowd was tremendous. I'm a London boy so it makes it that much sweeter."

Sarah Stevenson's hopes of a medal in the -67kg class ended early as she lost 5-1 to America's Paige McPherson.
