Usain Bolt has launched a furious attack on former Olympic champion Carl Lewis after the American questioned the legitimacy of the Jamaican team's sprint success.

Bolt made history on Thursday when he became the first man to win back-to-back Olympic titles at both the 100m and 200m, surpassing the achievements of Lewis, who won the double in 1984 and 100m gold after Ben Johnson was disqualified for doping in 1988.

Bolt, who led a Jamaican clean sweep in the 200m as Yohan Blake and Warren Weir completed the podium, dismissed Victor Conte's claims that 60 per cent of athletes at London 2012 are doping, and hit out at Lewis, who suggested that anti-doping programmes were not stringent enough in Jamaica.

Bolt, who was rested for the heats as Jamaica strolled into the final of the men's 4x100m relay, accused the former champion of attention seeking and attempting to taint the sport.

"I want to say that I have no respect for Carl Lewis," Bolt said. "It is looking for attention, for an athlete out of the sport to be saying things is really upsetting. He was talking about doping and for me he was just looking for attention.

"It is really annoying when people on the sidelines say stupid stuff. If you want attention then go and do something. A lot of the people who are trying to taint our sport, like Lewis, people don't even remember who they are.

"Without a doubt we are drug-free. We train hard. I see us all train together, we throw up every day, we take ice baths, we end up flat out on the track. When people taint us it is really hard but we are trying our best to show the world that we are running clean."
