Lord Moynihan to step away from BOA

Lord Moynihan has announced that he is to step down as chairman of the British Olympic Association later this year.

Moynihan, who has been in the role for almost seven years, will move on when a successor is elected in November - in order to give successful candidate the time to settle in before the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.

Moynihan played a key role in overseeing the development of British sport which reaped 65 medals, including 29 golds, at London 2012 - the greatest haul for nearly 100 years.

Meanwhile, sports minister Hugh Robertson has hinted that London could yet bid for the Games once again in 2024.

The 2024 bidding process looks likely to be hotly contested, however, with Kenya and the United States both likely to put forward candidate city bids. If Madrid or Istanbul win the right to host the 2020 Games (Tokyo is the only other candidate), a European city is also unlikely to be awarded hosting responsibilities for at least another eight years.
