Sergio Perez admits "it's not going to be an easy weekend" for McLaren as it will struggle with the bumpy track surface in Monaco.

McLaren was especially weak in the season-opening Australian Grand Prix as ride-height issues with the MP4-28 means it is not competitive on street circuits. When Perez was asked for his thoughts about those problems this weekend, he admitted it would be tough for McLaren but still believes the drivers can try to negate the car's weaknesses.

"I have to say it's not going to be an easy weekend," Perez said. "It's not going to be an easy one to put the lap together, but as a racing driver you have to try your best. In Monaco of course the car is very important - if you don't have a strong car or good car over the bumps then it's very difficult for traction and then it's even tougher - but I still think [the drivers] can do a good difference here."

Perez also said McLaren might need "some tricky conditions" to be competitive in qualifying on Saturday.

"I think the recovery has to come step by step. At the moment we are quite far away, we are not giving up, we have to win some races this year - that's our target - and this is what everybody is working flat out in the factory for. It's been a difficult start to the season with a car that is more than far away from being capable of fighting for victories, but the target here is to improve. To improve what we did in Barcelona and hopefully a tricky circuit and some tricky conditions can help and we can do a perfect qualifying. That's the target for us; to be in a good position for the race."
