McLaren team principal Martin Whitmarsh says technical director Paddy Lowe will remain at the team for 2013 but admitted his future after that is uncertain.

Lowe has been linked with a move to Mercedes with Ross Brawn rumoured to be on his way out, and Lowe himself decided to stay away from the launch of the new McLaren MP4-28. Whitmarsh said that his absence was solely to ensure the focus was on the new car and confirmed that Lowe would not be leaving the team this season.

"The certainty is that Paddy will be a part of the team for another year," he said. It's less certain, as has been speculated in the media, beyond that. It's something I'm sure we will have some certainty on in the near future."

Asked why Lowe did not attend the launch, Whitmarsh said: "I think clearly there was a lot of media interest. I think it's good that Paddy concentrates on doing his job and I don't think he wants to create any embarrassment for the team or to any of his colleagues. So of his own election he decided it was better if he wasn't here."

If Lowe was to leave McLaren for Mercedes he could face six months on gardening leave before being able to take up his new role.
