Jenson Button believes Lewis Hamilton's pace will "shock" Mercedes once it gets the car to his liking.

Hamilton has struggled over one lap compared to Nico Rosberg so far this season, with just one pole position to Rosberg's three as he admits he isn't comfortable under braking. Asked in an interview with Auto Motor und Sport if he was surprised by Hamilton's lack of pace, Button said it was just a matter of time until his former McLaren team-mate was able to show his full potential.

"You have to be fair, he has at least collected significantly more points than Nico," Button said. "Lewis is incredibly fast, but for him it's the same as all of us; if he does not have the right balance in the car that suits him, and that he was used to for many years, then it is not easy. And of course Nico is also fast, but Lewis has not lost his speed. It is still there, he will come back and then he will shock you all."

With the Mercedes tyre test still to go to tribunal, Button was asked if he felt Mercedes had been helped by getting time on track with the 2013 car.

"Both drivers say no. You have to believe them otherwise they would be a liar if they did. So I believe them."
