Nico Rosberg is concerned Mercedes could struggle with thermal tyre degradation at the Singapore Grand Prix after his tyres had a tendency to overheat during Friday practice.

Rosberg was third fastest in the second practice session but still over a second off the lead Red Bull of Sebastian Vettel. However, his main concern is with the tyres overheating due to the characteristics of the track.

"We still have some work ahead of us tonight to catch up tonight, but it's going to be difficult," he said. "It's all about the tyres overheating. The tyres are overheating a lot on one lap but also over the long run and that leads to degradation. That's the challenge."

Asked to explain why the Singapore circuit was causing problems, he added: "The main thing is that the surface of the track is very sharp - the little rocks in the asphalt have very sharp points. That puts a lot of energy into the tyres as they slide on those.

"Also the tyres usually cool down on the straights because of the wind on the surface, but here there aren't many straights and they are very short. So those are the two reasons for that."
