Webber not surprised by rivals' pace

Mark Webber said there were "no surprises" from any of Red Bull's rivals in practice for the Monaco Grand Prix.

Webber was fifth fastest in the second practice session on Thursday afternoon but 0.7s slower than Nico Rosberg's best time. Webber's long run pace was more competitive however, and he said he was not surprised to be so far off the pace on low fuel and thinks Red Bull will make more progress on Saturday.

"I think traditionally if you see us on Thursdays we're never too electric, so it's probably one of our better Thursday's of the last few years to be fair," Webber said. "But you've still got to be very, very focused, concentration is very high, it's a challenging venue to pull everything together.

"We want to obviously get short run performance then wanted to get short run data and long run data which I think we both got. There's some quick cars out there; no surprises, we've seen that on Saturday's at the last few grands prix. We've got some quick guys but all in all a reasonably smooth day for us. We've got plenty to go through and obviously a rest day tomorrow to go through the data and go from there."

Asked if he could have matched Rosberg's time in a qualifying simulation, Webber admitted the RB9 didn't have that kind of pace in practice.

"Well if we could we would have done it today. A 14.7s is not hanging around, let's see how things go. As usual in qualifying here I was not really in the window last year up until my last lap in Q3 so I need to rediscover that again if I can and be towards the front; you need to be here."
