Pastor Maldonado said Max Chilton's move was "very dangerous" after he crashed heavily in the Monaco Grand Prix.

Chilton had just cut the Nouvelle Chicane and was defending the inside line from Maldonado approaching Tabac, but then moved back across on the Williams. Maldonado was launched off the back of Chilton and in to the barrier at high speed, causing a red flag as the debris was cleared and the barrier repaired.

Chilton was punished with a drive through penalty and while Maldonado said he was unhurt, he said the incident could have been much worse.

"I'm fine, just ready for the next race," Maldonado said. "A bit disappointed for what happened, a bit disappointed for the weekend, I love this track. I was a bit surprised at the moment of the crash because I was on a clean line on the outside and he shifted across completely to my line. This kind of manoeuvre is very dangerous. Today fortunately everything is OK but it caused a big crash."

Chilton said he wasn't aware Maldonado had pulled alongside but accepted his penalty in the race.

"With regard to the accident with Pastor, Esteban [Gutierrez] made a late lunge into the chicane and I could see he was locked up so I had to take action to avoid him, which meant missing the chicane. I rejoined coming out of Turn 11 and the apex to Turn 12 was fast approaching. I was aware that someone was behind me but not alongside me. The stewards determined a drive-through penalty for me and I accept that decision. After the race I went to see Pastor to check he was okay."
