David Haye has scoffed at the prospect of handing veteran American Bernard Hopkins a shot at the WBA Heavyweight title.

Haye was hugely impressive in stopping the durable John Ruiz in his first defence on Saturday and immediately set his sights on the Klitschko brothers. On the same evening, Hopkins exacted revenge on Roy Jones Jnr 17 years after their first bout and he called out Haye following his win in Las Vegas.

Haye was complimentary about Hopkins, but suggested the American was targeting one final pay day and that his focus was on unifying the division.

"I think he just wants a big pay day, to fight for the heavyweight championship of the world he can demand big money," Haye told Radio Five.

"Bernard Hopkins is one of my idols. Looking back at his fights over the last 20, 25 years, he's always been a great fighter.

"But now he's 45 years of age, he fought another 40-year-old on the same night as me and it was a dire fight for everybody there in attendance."
