Miley beats Olympic champion in Istanbul

Hannah Miley beat Olympic champion and controversial figure Ye Shiwen to win gold in the 400m individual medley at the World Short-Course Championships in Istanbul on Wednesday.

Ye produced staggering times during her Olympic campaign in London, with her freestyle leg over the final 100m only three hundredths of a second short of that recorded by men's champion Ryan Lochte.

The methods of Ye's preparations were scrutinised, yielding no untoward findings, and so the gauntlet was set for the likes of Miley - who finished fifth in London - to play catch-up on the world's leading swimmer.

The final hinged on the breaststroke leg, which saw Miley come from fourth to first, establishing a 2.04-second lead. Ye responded, but fell 0.19s short of snatching victory.

Miley's time of four minutes, 23.14 seconds was a championship record.

"A lot of top athletes aren't here so for me I see it as an opportunity and any opportunity I see I try and take it," she said. "So for me I was aiming for it to be a confidence booster for both myself and my dad and what we are doing this season.

"Not only were we trying to chase placings, but also to do a really good time which I was really happy with.

"But the main thing is long-course (50m) swimming so I am really happy with what I've done, but for me I am not going to be happy with it until I can prove I can do it long course as well."

Elsewhere, Jemma Lowe won bronze in the 200m butterfly with a national record time.
