Rudman takes skeleton gold for GB

Shelley Rudman won the first ever World Championship gold for Great Britain in women's skeleton on Friday morning in St Moritz.

The 2006 Olympic silver medallist joined her partner Kristan Bromley in becoming a skeleton World Champion as she converted a one-second advantage over her rivals after two runs into final victory.

American Noelle Pikus-Pace finished second and the bronze medal went to Canada's Sarah Reid, who edged Great Britain's Lizzy Yarnold into fourth on the final run.

Rudman had previously said that 2013 would be a warm-up for next year's Winter Olympics in Russia and the 31-year-old was surprised by her victory.

"It went really well yesterday so was more relaxed today but I still didn't expect to win until I finished," Rudman said. "I hope I didn't scare you too much on that run."

Rudman, from Wiltshire, is a two-time European Champion in the skeleton and in December she set a track record on the Winterberg course in Germany, blitzing the field to leave her nearest rival almost a second behind.
