Wrestling to get another chance
The International Olympic Committee has confirmed that three sports have been added to the shortlist to be included in the 2020 Olympic Games programme.
Squash, basketball/softball and wrestling were voted by the IOC executive board for consideration onto the 2020 programme, but it dismissed the chances of wushu, wakeboarding, roller sports, karate and sport climbing making it onto the roster.
The final decision as to which sport will be given the nod will be made in Buenos Aires in September, where the board will also decide on which city the Games will be hosted in.
Whichever sport proves victorious come September will be added to the programme with golf and rugby sevens, which were proposed in February.
The space for the extra sport was freed when wrestling was removed from the Olympic programme, also in February, although it will now be given another chance after the committee voted for it following 30 minute presentations by each international federation.
"The executive board received excellent presentations today from eight international federations," said IOC president Jacques Rogge.
"It was never going to be an easy decision but I feel my colleagues on the board made a good decision in selecting baseball/softball, squash and wrestling to be put forward in Buenos Aires.
"I wish the three shortlisted sports the best of luck in the run-up to the vote in September and would like to thank the other sports for their hard work and dedication."
