Oscar Pistorius' trial for the murder of Reeva Steenkamp has been adjourned until August 19.

Pistorius has been charged with the premeditated murder of his girlfriend Steenkamp and he returned to court for the first time since being freed on bail.

The paralympian denies the charges, saying he was acting in self-defence after mistaking her for an intruder.

It was a brief appearance in court, with Pistorius accompanied by his sister and brother as well as other family and friends, as both the prosecution and defence were seeking a postponement until August.

At Pretoria magistrates court, magistrate Daniel Thulare granted the adjournment and the athlete was released on the same bail conditions he has had to observe since February.

During the brief hearing, in which Pistorius spoke only once to confirm he understood the conditions, Thulare said he was a "little bit concerned" by the media coverage and asked for the South African judicial process to be respected.

Thulare asked the prosecution team why they wanted a postponement. Prosecutor Andrea Johnson said she could not share that information in public. The defence agreed with the delay.
