Ryan Lochte shrugged off concerns about his fitness by taking his first gold medal of the World Championships in the 200m individual medley.

The American's time of one minute 54.98 seconds in Barcelona was enough to beat Japan's Kosuke Hagino and Thiago Pereira of Brazil.

It was his third 200m medley world title, making 28-year-old Lochte only the second man, after compatriot Michael Phelps, to achieve the feat.

Lochte, an 11-time Olympic medallist, said: "I didn't know what to expect this World Championships.

"It's good to get a win out of this Worlds considering the circumstances I was in, taking time off and starting back in training late, so I'm happy with it."

Britons Georgia Davies and Lauren Quigley finished in sixth and eighth place respectively in the 50m backstroke final, while Andrew Willis, Michael Jamieson and Craig McNally all qualified for finals.
