Whitlock wins world silver for Great Britain

Great Britain's Max Whitlock won the silver medal in the men's pommel horse final at the Gymnastics World Championships.

Whitlock was edged to the gold by Japan's Kohei Kameyama in Antwerp, whose score of 15.833 was enough to eclipse the Brit's total of 15.633.

The 20-year-old was vying to become Britain's first male gymnastics world champion, but was pleased despite having to settle for second spot.

"I am really happy with that, my routine was a big risk but to come out with a medal is good," Whitlock told BBC Sport.

"There were bits in the routine where I thought I could have fallen off but overall I am happy. It was a little bit scruffy and there's room for improvement but I really can't complain with a World Championships silver medal to cap a great year for me."

Whitlock won two bronze medals during the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Elsewhere, Dan Purvis suffered agony as he finished just outside the medal positions in the floor event. Purvis won bronze in the 2010 world championships, but stated he was proud of his efforts throughout the week.

"Going into it I just wanted to enjoy it and then, as it progressed, I thought, 'I can get quite close here'," Purvis said. "I've been strong all week and I'm really satisfied and proud of my World Championships."

Kenzo Shirai won gold for Japan and became the first athlete to perform a quadruple twist at a major event during his routine.
