Franchitti released from hospital

Dario Franchitti has been released from hospital following his horror crash at the Grand Prix of Houston Prix, but will require further surgery on his right ankle.

Franchittii sustained a spinal fracture, concussion and a fracture to his right ankle after colliding with Takuma Sato 88 laps into the race, on one of the fastest sections of the track. Considerable debris also flew into a spectator area, injuring at least 13 fans.

However, in a statement issued through IndyCar, four-time Series champion Franchitti thanked both trackside doctors and the Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center and also maintained he would be watching his Chip Ganassi team-mates on television.

"I'm thankful to have such a great family and such wonderful friends and fans," Franchitti said. "Thanks to everyone at the hospital and the track who took such good care of me during my stay in Houston.

"I look forward to watching Scott [Dixon], Alex [Tagliani] and the Target team next weekend on television, and will be pulling for them as they go for another championship."

IndyCar confirmed in a statement that the Scot would be transferred to Indianapolis in order to further assess his condition.
