World champion Teelow dies during Bridge-to-Bridge

World champion water skier Sarah Teelow has died after crashing during a high-speed endurance race in Australia.

The 20-year-old fell from her skis shortly after the start of the 75-mile Bridge-to-Bridge race on the Hawkesbury River, near Sydney, on Sunday.

Teelow was air-lifted to Royal North Shore Hospital in a critical condition with spinal and head injuries, but passed away late on Monday.

Ski Racing Australia described Teelow, daughter of two-time world waterski champion Tania, as "one of the sport's most accomplished young competitors".

In a statement, they said: "The ski racing fraternity is deeply saddened by Sarah's passing and extends its condolences to her family."

Teelow is the seventh waterskier to die in an accident in Australia in the last five years. Skiers can reach speeds of nearly 90mph on the Bridge-to-Bridge course.
