Cheshire makes history in Calgary

Rowan Cheshire has become the first British female skier to win gold at a World Cup event since Jill Curry's 1992 aerials triumph, after securing halfpipe victory in Calgary.

Cheshire is also the first British female to win gold in the event, which she achieved with a score of 80.40 in her first run. Last season, the 18-year-old won bronze at the World Junior Championships in Valmalenco.

"Rowan has been performing incredibly in training for some time and we felt it was only a matter of time before the results started coming," coach Pat Sharples told BBC Sport. "She's worked so hard to get to where she is and I feel the best is still yet to come."

The Stoke skier will find out on January 22 whether she has a quota place when the team for the Sochi Winter Olympics is announced. Cheshire is currently second in the International Ski Federation list, and must remain in the top 24 to be in with a chance.

Emma Lonsdale enjoyed a career-best finish of 10th in Canada, which marked the third of four Freestyle Skiing World Cup events in the season. The final event takes place on January 10 in Northstar, USA.
