Maxim Shmyrev won his third World Championship of Ping Pong title with a straight sets victory over Ilija Lupulesku at Alexandra Palace.

Russian Shmyrev, who has reached the final of this tournament every year since its inauguration in 2011, eased past his American opponent.

"This is a great tournament and this is a great venue," Shmyrev said. "Hopefully we can increase the popularity of the sport."

Shmyrev had earlier seen off Richard Gonzales of the Philippines 2-1 in the semi-finals, while Lupulesku eased past England's Andrew Rushton 2-0.

Rushton was one of four Brits to reach the quarter-finals, but was the only one who made it through as compatriots Chris Doran and Andrew Baggaley and Scotland's Gavin Rumgay fell to Gonzales, Lupulesku and Shmyrev respectively.
