Yarnold crowned skeleton World Cup champion

Lizzy Yarnold has won the skeleton World Cup after finishing 152 points ahead of rival Noelle Pikus-Pace.

Yarnold placed ninth in the final race of the competition, but despite Pikus-Pace winning the race in Germany, Yarnold sealed victory, having held a 225-point lead over Pikus-Pace in the last round of action. It is the first time that Yarnold has not finished on the podium in the eight races this season.

"I can't believe these last two years - it's amazing to say that I'm overall World Cup champion," Yarnold told the BBC. "It's something I dreamt of and I can't stop grinning from ear to ear." Yarnold will head to next month's Winter Olympics full of confidence, and is hoping to replicate her form in Sochi.

"It takes a lot of energy to win. This week I took the opportunity to get a bit of rest ahead of Sochi and ahead of all the kitting out we've got next week back in the UK," she said.

"To be as consistent as I have with seven podium finishes, which is a record, is a great achievement and then to win this crystal globe that I can keep for life is the best thing in my whole career - if Sochi goes well as well it will be absolutely perfect."
