Chad Randall will captain Harlequins Rugby League in the absence of England international Rob Purdham, who is expected to be out for 12 weeks following shoulder surgery.

Reacting to the news, Randall said: "It is a great honour to be awarded the captaincy and I am looking forward to leading the boys in Purdham's absence. I have been with this group of players for several years now and have played a lot of games for Quins, which will all definitely help."

The 29-year-old Australian hooker joined Harlequins in 2006 from the National Rugby League's Manly-Warringah. He will lead the side for the first time in Friday's friendly against London Skolars, and head coach Brian McDermott has insisted that the armband will not change Randall's playing style.

"Chad Randall has been a massive leader for us over the past few years," he said. "His on-the-field leadership and demeanour will not need to change much, he will just be wearing the captain's armband for now."

Elsewhere, St Helens continued their preparations for Super League XV with a 42-26 victory at Widnes Vikings on Tuesday night. Debutant New Zealand international Sia Soliola was in impressive form for Saints, touching down in the first half.
