France's Teddy Tamgho was the star of the show at the Diamond League meeting in New York as he produced the third-longest jump of all time in the triple jump.

The world indoor champion obliterated the field as he recorded a massive final-round effort of 17.98m to beat Sweden's former Olympic champion Christian Olsson and Britain's Phillips Idowu into second and third place respectively.

Idowu started the night impressively as he grabbed the second-round lead with a leap of 17.22m. The Briton improved to 17.31 but never looked likely of matching Tamgho as he upped the ante in spectacular style.

Heptathlete Jessica Ennis enjoyed a much better evening as she got the better of American rival Hyleas Fountain in a reduced three-event challenge at the meeting.

Ennis, who is preparing for next month's European Championships, won the opening shot put competition with a throw of 13.61m compared to Fountain's 13.47m but the American hit back in the long jump with a jump of 6.65m to beat Ennis's 6.51m. Ennis saved her best for last though as she triumphed in the 100m hurdles in 12.85 seconds to continue her fine recent form.

"I was really pleased with my long jump as it was a personal best," Ennis said. "I would have liked to have gone a little bit faster in the hurdles but, all in all, it was a good competition for me.

"A three-event competition like this is actually ideal preparation and will be beneficial towards the European Championships."

Elsewhere, Olympic champion Veronica Campbell-Brown defeated world champion Allyson Felix to win the 200m and Trinidad's Richard Thompson won the men's 100m in the absence of Diamond League leader Asafa Powell and Usain Bolt with a wind-assisted time of 9.89 seconds.
