Illness denies Etherington bid for fifth medal

Britain's Jade Etherington will not be competing for a fifth medal at the Winter Paralympics after illness has forced her to withdraw from her final event in Sochi.

Etherington, with her guide Caroline Powell, had become Britain's most successful Winter Paralympian after securing three silver medals in the downhill, slalom and super combined events, as well as winning bronze in the super-G.

However, illness has ruled out an attempt to claim a fifth medal, and Etherington will be taking no part in the giant slalom.

Meanwhile, Britain's first gold medallists at the Games Kelly Gallagher and her guide Charlotte Evans missed out on a medal on the final day in Sochi, with Gallagher falling on her first run in the giant slalom.
