Hamilton named Britain's richest sportsman

Lewis Hamilton has been named Britain's wealthiest sportsman by the Sunday Times Rich List with a fortune worth £68 million.

The Formula One star, who has put together three successive wins in the Malaysian, Bahrain and Chinese Grands Prix, has seen his career earnings rise by £8 million in the last 12 months.

  • 4. Steve Nash (basketball) - £56m (up from £53m)
  • 5. Rio Ferdinand (football) - £44m (up from £42m)
  • 6. Andy Murray (tennis) - £40m (up from £32m)
  • 7= Steven Gerrard (football) - £37m (up from £33m)
  • 7= Frank Lampard (football) - £37m (up from £34m)
  • 9= Luol Deng (basketball) - £36m (up from £28m)

Manchester United's Wayne Rooney was also revealed as the richest football player in the Premier League, having earned £60 million.

The striker signed a new five-year, £300,000-a-week deal at United in February, making him the highest-paid player in the Premier League's history. Rooney is third on the list of sportsmen overall, one place behind Hamilton's former McLaren team-mate Jenson Button.

Andy Murray has seen his fortune rise by 25 percent to £40 million after ending Britain's 77-year wait for a male singles champion at Wimbledon last summer, making £8 million in 12 months to leave him as the country's sixth-highest earner.

Rio Ferdinand, Rooney's United team-mate, is fifth on the list with earnings of £44 million, up by £2 million from last year's list.

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard and Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard share seventh place with earnings of £37 million, while new United interim manager Ryan Giggs is tied for ninth place on £36 million with NBA star Luol Deng, who featured for Great Britain and the London 2012 Olympics.
