England thrashed by Australia at hockey World Cup

England's men were thrashed 5-0 by Australia at the hockey World Cup as their hopes of reaching the semi-finals suffered a blow.

England were behind after 25 seconds as Australia led 4-0 at half-time after goals from Matt Gohdes, Liam De Young, Jamie Dwyer and Kieran Govers.

England conceded a fifth goal three minutes into the second period as Aran Zalewski capped off a dominant display from defending champions Australia.

The defeat for England means they must beat Belgium in their final group game on Monday in order to qualify for the last four.

"We let ourselves down massively in the first half and at half-time it was kind of done then," England captain Barry Middleton said.

"We knew the Belgium game would turn into a quarter-final and we are happy to have another chance to put this right."

Australia reach the semi-finals for the 10th consecutive time and top the group on 12 points. Belgium are second on nine points with England on seven points in third position.
