England's men were beaten 2-0 by Argentina in the third-place play-off at the hockey World Cup.

Matias Paredes struck twice in the space of a minute in the second half to secure the bronze medal for Argentina - their first medal at the World Cup.

Paredes scored the first goal in the 55th minute with a backhand shot. A minute later he fired in a close range volley to put Argentina into a commanding position.

"We made a couple of mistakes and they scored a couple of good goals," England captain Barry Middleton.

"It's demoralising to lose the game in a couple of bad minutes where the game's been so tight - we played how we wanted to and just didn't do enough in the end. It's hard to take right now, but it's been an amazing tournament."

Argentina coach Carlos Retegui collects his second bronze medal in as many days having guided Argentina's women to third place against the USA.

"It means so much to all of us," said Argentina captain Lucas Rey. "What can I tell you, we are so, so happy. We came here in the hope of finishing fifth, but we have kept fighting all tournament."
