Bradley Wiggins is insisting that his meticulous preparation for this year's Tour de France will see him improve on last year's fourth-placed finish.

The three-time Olympic gold medallist will lead the newly-formed Team Sky when the race begins in Rotterdam on Saturday.

"Physically I'm capable of winning it," Wiggins said. "There are a lot of other things to go into and you need a bit of luck with crashes coming into it, too.

"The mental side is just as huge as the physical side. I've got a strong team behind me so that helps. We've prepared better than last year, more for the demands of the Tour. Last year I stumbled across good form and then realised what I was capable of."

Elsewhere, Mark Cavendish believes that a repeat of his six stage wins last year should take him to the green jersey, which is awarded to the points winner.

"Six stage wins should secure the green jersey, but I didn't get it last year so nothing is certain," he told BBC Sport. "We can minimise the chances of losing and if we do that, we have a high percentage chance of winning it."

Garmin rider David Millar, the last Brit to wear the yellow jersey, is sacrificing his bid for personal glory by putting his team's needs first. "Personally, I'd love to win a stage, I'm indifferent to which one, but my role within the team is more important as I'm the road captain," he said.
