Proud, Walker-Hebborn and Wallace strike gold in pool

England and Scotland enjoyed another successful evening in the Commonwealth Games swimming events with three gold medals and a clutch of records.

England's Ben Proud began the gold rush with victory in the first final of the night at Tollcross International Swimming Centre in Glasgow, winning the 50m butterfly in a new British record.

That was followed up by Scotland's third gold medal of the meet, Daniel Wallace pipping a strong challenge from Australia's Thomas Fraser-Holmes and Sebastien Rousseau of South Africa to take the 400m individual medley.

Chris Walker-Hebborn then smashed the Commonwealth Games record in winning the 100m backstroke, with English compatriot Liam Tancock claiming his eighth career Commonwealth medal by finishing in a tie for third.

The biggest roar of the night came, naturally, for home hope Wallace and his stirring performance in the individual medley. "I knew where I needed to be at each point [in the medley]," he told BBC Sport. "It was a dogfight to the finish but I'm really happy. It's not every day you get to race and win in front of your home crowd."

in the women's events, Scotland's Corrie Scott edged out Sophie Taylor of England to take bronze in the 50m breaststroke, while England's Siobhan O'Connor took silver in the 100m butterfly.
