Golden Barrow writes name in diving history books

Sarah Barrow became the first British female to claim a European individual diving gold medal since 1927 after topping the standings in the 10 metres platform at the European Championships in Berlin.

Barrow sealed victory with a personal best total 363.7 and, although delighted with gold, was a little surprised at achieving it.

"It's really good. I came here for a medal and I wanted a gold but I didn't expect it," Barrow, 25, told BBC Sport. "Tonia Couch and I made history two years ago winning the 10m synchro gold and now I've got an extra one.

Glasgow to host 2018 Championships

• Glasgow has been named host city for the 2018 European Championships following its success in staging the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
• It will be the first time that Glasgow has hosted the swimming championships, although dates and venues are yet to be announced.
• "Organising that event at such a high level is a kind of guarantee for us for 2018," said European Aquatics Federation president Paolo Barelli."Everyone had the chance to watch the outstanding success of the Commonwealth Games."

"Last year at the World Championships I was fourth and I was fourth at the European Championships as well, so that's why I was hoping for a medal.

"None of my dives dropped below seven marks and I actually increased to eight-and-a-half, so that is a really good individual competition for me.

"It was my last competition - I've had a big year and a lot of injuries, so it's good to finish the season on a high."

However, it was a stark contrast for Chris Mears and Jack Laugher, who finished fifth in the 3m synchro and were way off their best.

Laugher said: "It such a bad way to end the season. We both had a really good world championships and an amazing Commonwealth Games - we should have finished there.

"To come here and finish on that kind of low, it sucks, and it really hurts our pride. What we've done throughout the year feels worthless now having finished on such a bad performance."

Mears said: "It's been a ridiculously long season for us. There was something telling me I was very tired because I lost one of our main dives before we came here, due to stress and tiredness I would diagnose it with."

Elsewhere, Molly Renshaw claimed the 200m breaststroke silver medal with a British record while Adam Peaty won through to the 50m breaststroke final with a new world record time of 26.62 seconds.
