Gear taking nothing for granted

Hosea Gear has insisted that he still has plenty of work to do to secure a place in the All Blacks' Rugby World Cup squad, despite picking up five tries on their recent Grand Slam tour.

The Hurricanes wing rounded off a superb season with a brace against Wales in Cardiff on Saturday, having already enjoyed a famous series with the New Zealand Maori in June as well as a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games Sevens.

He is already turning his attention to the forthcoming Super Rugby season and has learned the hard way in recent seasons that a place at the top table is hard earned.

His 2008 debut, against Australia in Hong Kong, was followed by a period in the wilderness, with only one cap added prior to his try-scoring Twickenham bow at the start of November.

"I was just fortunate to get a bit of game time on this tour and to play better than what I did in the past," he said. "I have been concentrating on building on each game and trying to get better.

"I am still a bit nervous [about a place in World Cup squad]. No places are really cemented, I guess. I am just going to have to build on my form going into the Super 15."

Canterbury centre Sonny Bill Williams has also been impressive on tour and will also be eyeing a World Cup squad place. All Blacks coach Wayne Smith praised the former league convert's introduction to Test rugby and also his worth as a character around the squad.

"He is a very selfless man," he said. "He is exactly what you want in a team and I think he has had a great season in the ITM Cup and had a solid tour.

"Now there is a Super 15 campaign ahead of him with some very good coaches to build on a pretty good base. I think he will come through the Super 15 as a top player and there will be strong competition between Ma'a Nonu and him for that number 12 jersey."
