Hosea Gear chasing All Blacks dream

Hosea Gear has set his sights on returning to the All Blacks side for the 2015 Rugby World Cup, saying he is leaving French club Toulouse to play for Honda in Japan before taking up a Super Rugby contract in New Zealand.

"From here I'm headed to Japan for one season. Their season starts in August and runs through to February," Gear said after scoring two tries for the Barbarians in their 39-29 win over an England XV at Twickenham on Sunday.

"Then I am heading home to play Super Rugby to give myself the opportunity to make the All Blacks for the World Cup."

The former Hurricanes and Highlanders winger left New Zealand last year after what he said was a mentally frustrating time being "in and out of the All Blacks".

"I spoke to [All Blacks coach] Steve Hansen before I left, and I mentioned there was a possibility I could come back and he was all for that," Gear said.

"At the same time I think it will probably help create a little bit more depth in New Zealand rugby for that World Cup effort."

Gear concedes he faces a "massive challenge" to claim All Blacks selection on a wing ahead of the likes of Julian Savea, Cory Jane and Ben Smith.

"The outside backs they've got at the moment have been doing an awesome job, and there's probably no reason to leave anyone of them out," Gear said.
