Richie McCaw would be a welcome addition to politics once he quits rugby, New Zealand party political leaders have said after Prime Minister John Key said after noting a "Richie for prime minister" banner at Eden Park on Saturday that the All Blacks captain was "not a bad option really".

McCaw, who became the most-capped player in Test history when he played his 142nd international against Australia on Saturday, has never expressed a public interest in politics, but the New Zealand Herald is reporting that "party leaders across the spectrum [have] warmed to the idea of him joining Parliament".

Maori Party co-leader Te Ururoa Flavell said "it would be great to have the calibre of leadership that someone such as Richie McCaw would bring" while the New Zealand Herald reported that Labour leader Andrew Little said the All Blacks captain "embodied many of [the party's] principles such as hard work, determination, and a vision for the future".

Mr Little said, however, that the role of MP would be "a backward step" for McCaw.

"We want him as President of New Zealand."
