Sonny Bill Williams will accompany the New Zealand sevens team to the opening World Rugby Sevens series tournament in Dubai as an observer to further learn about the game.

The All Blacks centre has made himself available for the All Blacks sevens side in hopes to add an Olympic medal to his two World Cup medals with the All Blacks, but the code-hopper missed out on selection in Gordon Tietjens's first squad of the 2015/16 season.

He will also get the chance to watch his younger sister Niall as she makes her debut for the New Zealand women's side.

With success in rugby, league and boxing, Williams said the chance to win an Olympic gold at Rio 2016 was something he couldn't resist.

"Growing up as a sportsman there's nothing bigger than the Olympics, so when that opportunity arose there was no way I wasn't going to chuck my hat in the ring. It's a lot of hard work but I'm really excited," Williams told sport360.com

"I just see it as a massive challenge. It's quite nerve-wracking and scary to be frank. It gets the juices going and I'm really excited about it."

While learning about the game Williams will also be doing promotional activities for the tournament, including interviews with local media outlets which he has already begun ahead of the tournament kick off next weekend.

"I've watched it on TV before so I'm really excited about coming to see it live," Willaims said. "I've been in contact with Tietj [Sir Gordon Tietjens] and he's pretty keen to get me there.

"I'll probably sit down and watch a few games with them and just try and get a feel for it. On top of that I'll get to see the New Zealand boys and hang around with them and enjoy my experience.

"I'm keen to get a feel for it. This is my break time, but I know I've got a lot to learn and what better time than coming over to Dubai and seeing the boys do their thing live and up close."
