Sam Burgess' move back to rugby league has stalled as the South Sydney Rabbitohs must free up space in their squad to ensure they stay under the salary cap to accommodate their new star recruit.

Burgess' arrival back in rugby league was confirmed on November 6 after a year in union which saw him win five England caps but leave just one season into a three-year deal. The Rabbitohs were glad to welcome back the hero of their 2014 Grand Final triumph but they will have to make room for the cross-code star to stay within the salary cap before the NRL will rubberstamp the deal.

The Rabbitohs have already released Dylan Walker, Isaac Luke and Glenn Stewart and a spokesperson said: "The Rabbitohs look forward to the confirmation of Sam's contract in the coming weeks." Their first match of the 2016 season is on March 6 against the Sydney Roosters.
