A clash of classic Wallabies will take centre stage at the inaugural Sydney 7s with a team from New South Wales and Queensland set to line-up during the second day of festivities.

The brainchild of Australian Women's Sevens coach Tim Walsh, the two classic teams will square off in between the Sevens action, with the age-old rivalry set to fire up again.

Recently retired Waratahs and Wallabies forward Stephen Hoiles will lead the New South Wales side alongside fellow Randwick teammates Adam Frier, Morgan Turini and Patrick Phibbs, while Queensland will be spearheaded by former Wallabies captain Nathan Sharpe, with fan favourite Radike Samo.

In a controversial move, Queensland have also enlisted the help of former Waratahs winger Lote Tiquri as a surprise weapon.

Walsh was happy with the inclusion of the Classics match saying the game would help raise the profile of Rugby Sevens.

"A number of these guys started their careers as Sevens players, which many people probably don't realise because they weren't seen or heard of until they made their professional debut in fifteens Rugby," Walsh said of the ten minute match.

"It proves how strong the Sevens game is and how good it's been for the careers of these players, its value as an elite pathway and also as a great game and great spectacle in its own right."

Teams:

New South Wales: Adam Frier, Pete Miller, Robbie Miller, Brendan Williams, Morgan Turinui, Stephen Hoiles, Ryan Cross, Pat Phipps, Scott Staniforth

Queensland: Elton Flately, Nathan Sharpe, Luke Doherty, Radike Samo, Sam Crodingley, Karl Te Nana, Lote Tuqiri, damian McInally, Tom McVerry, Nick Gregorski, Moses Raulini, Tomasi Cama
