A crucial breakaway try from Franck Comba halfway through the second-half was the turning point of the French Cup final as Paris-based Stade Francais hung on to beat a valiant Colomiers side 28-23 at the Stade de France Saturday.

A late try from Colomiers scrum-half Fabrice Culinat in injury time set up a frantic finish but as Colomiers launched a further attack Stade Francais held the southern-based club at bay just metres from the line to send their fans home delirious with joy.

A see-saw first-half ended with the Paris-club clinging to a 14-13 lead but an early try from scrum-half Christophe Laussucq gave them some breathing space before Comba intecepted a stray pass and raced in to touch down under the posts for a 28-16 lead.

Colomiers were punished by some poor penalty taking from David Skrela as he missed three relatively easy second-half kicks and the game was slipping away before Culinat's quick-thinking try set up the dramatic finish but Stade Francais held on in front of watching French president Jacques Chirac.
