  • England fly-half Jonny Wilkinson made a successful return to the playing field with his new club Toulon, kicking two penalties in a 9-3 friendly win over Brive on Friday night.

Wilkinson, playing his first game since fracturing his kneecap while on duty for his old club Newcastle in October, clocked in for the first-half as Philippe Saint-Andre's side continued to prepare for their assault at the Top 14. Toulon play their first match of the season against Stade Francais on August 14.

His return will have spurred on Wasps playmaker Danny Cipriani, who has dropped out of the England Elite Player Squad following Wilkinson's return to fitness.

"I have dropped back. So I have to do everything I can to ensure I can get selected for the new year," he told The Times. "No doors have been shut and it is about how I and Wasps come out of the blocks in the first two months (of the season). I have had chats with Johnno and I know what areas he wants me to improve on - defence, for instance. I have to do everything I can to show him I have changed."

  • All Blacks fly-half Dan Carter played a full 80 minutes for club side Southbridge on his return to action, helping them to a 34-13 win over Hornby before declaring himself available for Canterbury's Air New Zealand Cup campaign.

Carter has been out of action since rupturing his Achilles tendon while on a sabbatical with French champions Perpignan, and will now be entering in to the thoughts of All Black coach Graham Henry.

"You can do so much rehab and get in the gym and do speed work ... but until you're out on the field its different so it's a start and I really enjoyed it," he told Television New Zealand. "I haven't really thought too much about the All Blacks. I just want to get back playing rugby. I'll see if Pens (Canterbury coach Rob Penney) wants me for next week. I'll be available

  • Fiji have retained the World Games Sevens title by defeating surprise finalists Portugal in front of a 39,000 strong crowd in Chines Taipei.

Fiji ran out 43-10 winners after defeating South Africa in the semi-final, the Sevens World Series champions forced to settle for bronze. Portugal defeated USA Sevens winners and World Cup finalists Argentina in the last four, providing another fillip to the IRB's bid for Olympic recognition.
