Assistant coach Shane Howarth has been shown the door at the Blues after another disappointing Super 14 campaign, but chief Pat Lam has been granted a reprieve to take on the challenge of the inaugural Super 15 next season.

Former All Blacks and Wales international Howarth had been working alongside Lam for two seasons, helping the franchise to finishes of ninth and seventh. The New Zealand Rugby Union (NZRU) and Blues confirmed that his role will now be advertised, although he is entitled to re-apply for the position.

The review panel consisted of NZRU board member Graham Mourie, NZRU high performance coach development manager Mike Chu, Blues chairman Greg Muir, Blues chief executive Andy Dalton, and Blues directors Grant Fox and Gary Whetton.

The coaching position will be advertised from July 11.
