Botha cited after All Black mauling

South Africa lock Bakkies Botha has been cited for an alleged headbutt during Saturday's opening Tri-Nations match against New Zealand.

South Africa lost the match 32-12 and Botha will now appear before a SANZAR judicial hearing in Auckland on Sunday to learn his fate. The second-row was cited by commissioner Scott Nowland for dangerous play following a tackle on All Blacks scrum-half Jimmy Cowan in the opening minute of the Test match.

Botha was not punished for the incident at the time, but was sin-binned later in the half for cynically ending a stunning All Black break. Following the final whistle, Springbok skipper John Smit admitted the yellow card had cost his team as they were overrun by the All Blacks.

"It was very silly," he said in reference to the yellow card. "Discipline wins and loses you Tests."

But it could yet get worse for Botha and South Africa with the giant lock appearing before Judicial Officer Dennis Wheelahan tomorrow, six days before their rematch with the All Blacks in Wellington.
