Jimmy Cowan has been included in New Zealand boss Graham Henry's 26-strong squad for the Tri-Nations clash with South Africa in Johannesburg on Saturday week. However, the Highlanders scrum-half is still struggling with the rib cartilage injury he suffered in the Kiwis' 49-28 defeat of Australia in Melbourne on July 31. He is scheduled to take a fitness test on Thursday and should he fail it, Alby Mathewson will travel in his place. Elsewhere, loose forward Liam Messam and midfielder Richard Kahui, who is recovering from a shoulder injury, have both been omitted from the touring party. Waikato's Messam has been made available for ITM duty this weekend, along with Ben Franks (Tasman), Israel Dagg (Hawke's Bay), Anthony Boric (North Harbour), Corey Flynn and Samuel Whitelock (both Canterbury).
