Highlanders scrum-half Aaron Smith has been cited for a tip tackle on Blues scrum-half Toby Morland during their Super Rugby match in Dunedin on Friday.

Smith received a yellow card for the incident in the 76th minute of the match, which the Highlanders lost 15-10, after coming on as a second-half replacement for All Blacks scrum-half Jimmy Cowan.

The Highlanders No.9 will now face a judicial hearing in Wellington on Monday charged with performing a dangerous tackle. The hearing will be chaired by Sanzar judicial officer, Nigel Hampton QC.

Smith's indiscretion was one of a number of lapses by the southern side, with skipper Jamie Mackintosh disappointed by their discipline at the final whistle.

"The ref tends to favour the attacking team and we just got the ball and turned it over," he said. "[We] did a lot of defending and we were trying to put pressure on rucks but we we're a little bit ill-disciplined and we need to be a little bit tidier there.

"We played some really good rugby in that first 20 minutes and then once again we just turned over the ball a little bit too much and gave away too many penalties."
