London Wasps are reportedly poised to appoint Cardiff Blues boss Dai Young as their new director of rugby.

The 43-year-old former Wales captain has been the subject of widespread speculation that he will be unveiled at Adams Park on Thursday as the successor to Leon Holden who stepped into the breach on an interim basis following the departure of Tony Hanks in February. However, the Blues have denied earlier reports that they have released Young from the final year of his contract and expect him to "honour" his exisiting deal.

"We have had no approach from London Wasps regarding Cardiff Blues Director of Rugby David Young," said a Blues spokesman. "David Young is still in contract at the Blues and has one year to run on that contract, which we expect him to honour."

Young, who steered the Blues to Amlin Challenge Cup and Anglo-Welsh Cup glory during his Blues tenure, has long been liked with the switch to England and is set to meet with Wasps chief executive Chris Thomas on Wednesday to finalise the terms of his deal.

The Blues ended a disappointing Magners League campaign in sixth place in the table having missed out on the Heineken Cup and Amlin Challenge Cup quarter-finals and exited the Anglo-Welsh Cup in the pool stages. Wasps suffered similarly fruitless campaign that saw them finish ninth in the Premiership table and miss out on Heineken Cup qualification for next season.

If the move is confirmed, Young will team up with Wales defence coach Shaun Edwards and will be able to call on the services of former Blues fly-half Nicky Robinson who joins the club from Premiership rivals Gloucester.
