Glasgow Warriors have admitted they are chasing the signature of Castres captain Chris Masoe.

The former All Blacks back-row is out of contract at the end of the season and has visited Glasgow to view their Scotstoun training facilities. The Warriors have already lost Richie Gray to Sale ahead of next season and with back-row duo Johnnie Beattie and John Barclay both out of contract come June, Warriors coach Sean Lineen has moved to strengthen the forward division.

With 20 caps to his name, Masoa's signing would be seen as a move to help herald in the next generation of Scottish back-rows and Lineen would look to the 32-year-old to make the same impact as current Crusaders boss Todd Blackadder did when he joined Edinburgh as player in 2001 and went on to coach in 2004.

"I will not comment on contract discussions but Chris is a player we are very keen to bring here," Lineen told the Scotsman. "He is one of several players I have been looking at, and as I understand it we are one of several clubs that he is considering moving to.

"He came here on a wet January day to see around and I was very impressed by him. The effect Todd Blackadder had on young Edinburgh back rows was huge and it is fair to say that I can envisage a similar effect if Chris was to come here. But we will have to wait and see what he chooses."
